INSPECTION CHECKLIST - MUZZLE-LOADING CANNON
__________Your overall first impression is favorable.
The Tube:
_______Tube is clean and free of rust or corrosion.
_______No sign of external damage or strains (bulges, cracks etc.)
_______Inside of the bore is clean and relatively smooth.
_______No internal signs of damage (lodgments, deep pits, etc.)
_______No sign of damage at breech of the bore.
_______On modern guns with liners, the liner is secure.
_______The vent is clear and of acceptable size (.20” or larger). #
_______No signs of cracks or bending around the trunnions.
The Carriage:
_______Wheels are tight and free of rot and insect infestation.
_______Body of the carriage is free of rot and insect infestation.
_______No pieces or parts missing cracked, bent or broken.
_______Wheels move freely.
_______Elevating mechanism works smoothly and properly.
_______None of the ironwork is coming loose.
_______Tube rotates freely on its trunnions.
_______Trunnion caps fit snugly and are properly keyed.
_______Lids of side boxes fit snugly. (If carriage mounted)
_______Wood generally free of serious checking and splintering.
_______Wheel hub does not gouge the end of the axletree.
_______Linchpin is not digging into wheel hub.
Equipment:
________All necessary equipment is present.
________Sponge is in good condition and fitted to the bore.
________Rammer head is secure and free of cracks.
________Prongs of the worm are sharp, not bent and sharply fitted to bore.
________Smaller items in good condition (linstock, thumbstall, buckets, etc.)
# Vents should be .20 inches or larger and free of cracks and rough crevices. Most smooth irregularities
are acceptable, but vents should have no deep pitting or cracks.
